Salt Lake City Newborn Photographer | How to Prepare for Your Baby’s Session
Capturing natural, bright, true-to-color newborn portraits across Salt Lake City, Utah County and throughout Utah.
Your baby's first photos are so special—and a little preparation goes a long way. As a Salt Lake City newborn photographer, I've learned what helps sessions run smoothly and result in beautiful images for families.
Studio vs. in-home newborn photography: How to choose
When deciding where to hold your newborn session, there isn't a right or wrong choice— it really comes down to your preferences, comfort, and lighting.
- Studio sessions may be best if:
- You don't want to worry about preparing or cleaning your home
- You prefer neutral, clean and consistent backgrounds
- You may not have consistent natural light
- In-home sessions may be best if:
- It's easier to keep everyone home (especially with multiple young kids)
- Your home has good natural light (ex: living room or baby's room)
- You want your home's style and personality reflected in your photos
When my clients are deciding between the two, I'm always happy to help guide them. Photos of your space can help me determine lighting and the best time of day for your session. If you're considering a studio, I also provide a list of my favorite newborn-friendly studios.
How to prepare for your newborn session:
- Try to keep your baby awake for 1-2 hours before to the session to help them sleep during our time together
- Feed your baby about 20-30 minutes before the session begins
- Bring anything meaningful you'd like included (blankets, outfits, etc)
- Pack essentials like diapers, wipes, a changing pad, and snacks for young kids
- Choose comfortable, neutral clothing that allows you to move easily during your session
- Most importantly, don't stress—babies are on their own schedule, and I always plan on adjusting as needed.
My goal is for you to feel prepared, relaxed, and fully taken care of.
What to expect during your newborn session:
- Sessions are baby-lead and relaxed, allowing time to pause for feeding or soothing
- I use white noise and a warm environment to help keep your baby calm and comfortable
- I am comfortable working with pets and love including them when possible, as long as they are well-behaved and able to remain calm during the session
- I will guide you through posing while prioritizing safety and your baby's comfort at all times
- Parents will assist with moving baby when needed, with my direction
- If your baby needs a break, I'll continue with photos with dad and kids, sibling photos, etc
- I'm very comfortable working with young kids and go at their pace to keep things as stress-free as possible
- We'll work through your questionnaire together to make sure we capture everything that matters most to you
- I am very mindful about keeping clean, sanitized hands throughout the session, even when I am not directly handling your baby
